Big-race specialist Glen Boss made the most of a last-minute pick-up ride on outstanding sprinter Hay List to make a one-act affair of the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick.
Boss got the call to partner the John McNair-trained five-year-old in the 1400m Group One when regular jockey Glyn Schofield was involved in a fall in the Sydney Cup a race earlier.
The pair had the weight-for-age contest safely in their keeping when Hay List turned for home lengths in front after making the pace from the outset.
His rivals chased valiantly but Hay List won as he liked from Hinchinbrook and Heart Of Dreams.
Boss described the win as “bittersweet” after Schofield’s fall but said it was “an absolute privilege” to be asked to ride the horse.
“He just oozes power,” he said.
“He relaxed unbelievably in the run.
“When he came up the rise he was never going to get beat.
“It just shows you how good Black Caviar is.”
The Peter Moody-trained Black Caviar, unbeaten in 12 starts and rated the world’s best racehorse, has left Hay List in her wake every time they have met.
